TOSHIBA
Portégé 3110
Toshiba has the edge once again in the ultrathin notebook
arena.
The Portégé is remarkably similar to the Sony Vaio 505RX. Indeed, at first glance it is hard to see the
difference between them: both computers feature remarkably similar 10.4" TFT
screens; the removable lithium-ion battery of each computer is lodged along the spine of
the display/keyboard interface; and each computer provides extended port access by means
of an optional mini-dock that is connected to the computer via a cable.

Although the Vaio 505RX has closed the gap
in weight and thickness, the DynaBook is still slimmer and lighter by a whisker. Weighing
a mere 1.4kg, including battery, the DynaBook is literally no deeper than
a thumb, at only 0.77" deep.

The keyboard is a full 18mm in
pitch, making it the easiest to touch type
with of any mini-notebook computer. Finally, the DynaBook features a far superior
pointing device, the pointing head style Accupoint, which is both fast and
accurate.
The Portége' series was the first of the
mini-notebooks to boast 32Kb of primary L1 write back Cache and 256Kb of
integrated L2 Cache. Add to this a P-II 300PE CPU with 64Mb
RAM as standard. Toshiba have fitted the DynaBook 3110 with a gigantic
6.0 GB hard drive, which at 6.5mm is the world's thinnest. Space has been saved with the FDD by simply
making it one of the tiniest floppy disk devices ever.
