Can Kodak's new camera
revolutionize photo sharing?
Kodak EasyShare One
The product: It has a bright 3-inch
LCD screen, 256MB of onboard memory, and a
4-megapixel CCD sensor, but the Kodak
EasyShare One's most compelling feature may
be its optional 802.11b Wi-Fi compatibility,
which will allow photographers to instantly
e-mail photos to friends and wirelessly
manage their online Ofoto albums. Billed by
Kodak as a fully wireless digital
photography system, the EasyShare One's
specs include:
- 4-megapixel CCD sensor
- 3X optical zoom, 36mm-to-108mm (35mm
equivalent) focal length
- 3-inch, fully articulated LCD
monitor with touch-pad capability
- 256MB of onboard memory, with SD
slot for additional storage
- Optional 802.11b SD Wi-Fi card
- Direct Ofoto compatibility for
managing photo albums
The price: When the Kodak EasyShare
One becomes available in June, it'll cost
$599 without the optional Wi-Fi adapter.
Price figures for the EasyShare One's
wireless card have not yet been released.
The prospects: In a nutshell, the
Kodak EasyShare One has the potential to do
for photo sharing what BlackBerrys did for
corporate e-mail. The ability to wirelessly
e-mail photos and manage online albums from
anywhere with a Wi-Fi hot spot (Starbucks,
anyone?) would be a boon to any family
photographer, and the EasyShare One's large
LCD screen and generous onboard memory are
nice pluses. Though the price is high for a
4-megapixel camera--and we're not yet sure
how much the Wi-Fi add-on will cost--the
EasyShare One's sky-high potential may
justify its hefty expense.
